The development of the BMR-2 was entrusted to the same 482nd design and technology center in Kyiv, and the production of the prototype and subsequent serial conversion was entrusted to the 17th BTRZ in Lvov. The basis for the BMR-2 or “izdeliye 048” was the T-54B tank. above the habitable compartment there is an armored superstructure made of sheets 60 mm thick in the frontal part and on the sides, 40 mm for the rear wall, 20 mm for the roof. The angles of inclination of the armor plates of the wheelhouse remained the same as those of the corresponding sheets (upper frontal part and sides) of the hull - becoming their continuation. To ensure embarkation and disembarkation, part of the roof of the protective cabin was hinged back. The vehicle was equipped with the V-55V engine, power transmission units and the chassis of the T-55 tank. In order to ensure self-defense, the BMR-2 was equipped with a closed anti-aircraft machine gun mount with an NSV machine gun, 12.7mm caliber, mounted on the commander's cupola. The ZPU is completely similar to that on the T-64A tank. The commander's cupola is welded in the shape of a hexagon. The PZU-5 sight was used to aim the machine gun. Thus, detection, tracking of targets and firing were carried out by the commander under the protection of a closed hatch cover. there are also 12 grenade launchers of the 902A “Tucha” system. The BMR-2 is equipped with a loading platform for transporting the working roller parts of the trawl and a boom crane for loadingunloading them. To control the attached trawling equipment, pneumatic and electrical systems were installed. The BMR-2 crew consisted of 5 people a commander, a driver and three sappers. The sappers were located on a seat in the rear of the crew compartment along the engine bulkhead. On the right and left sides of the sappers' seat there are emergency exit hatches, in which there are embrasures for firing from AKSM assault rifles. The main hatch for landing sappers is made above their seat in the roof of the hull. Used for trawling equipment was the KMT-7K trawl or "Parnas" trawl with the "izdeliye 283" electromagnetic attachment or KMT-9 "Perespros" trawl. The first prototypes of the BMR-2 “izdeliye 048” were assembled in 1985. In 1986, the BMR-2 was put into service and began to be supplied en masse to the 40th Army units located in Afghanistan.
