About this video: Spigot is one of the original Minecraft server software options that allows you to get plugins. Paper, PurPur, and other server software options are all based on Spigot, and while Spigot Minecraft servers are less optimized than the forks based on it, it still is a great option if you want a simple way to add plugins to a Minecraft server without tons of performance optimizations.

To get started, we will need to download the Spigot Minecraft server software. You can find a link in the description above to download Spigot. That will take you to our text guide on how to make a Spigot server. On this page, click “Download Spigot” to go to a page where you can download the Spigot Minecraft server software.

On this page, find the version of Spigot you want and click the “Download” button next to it. This will take you to a page where you can click the “Spigot-version.jar” text to start downloading the Spigot server software.

With the Spigot.jar downloaded, create a new “Minecraft Spigot Server” folder on your desktop and move the Spigot file you downloaded into it. Then, rename the spigot-version.jar file to simply “spigot.jar”.

Next, right-click in the folder and create a new text document. Open this text document and copy-and-paste the code from the description above depending on how much RAM you want to add to your Spigot Minecraft server.

Then, click file, save as, and name the file “run.bat”. Make sure to change “save type as” to “All Files” as well. Save the file, and you will now have a run.bat file. Double-click this to try to start your server. It is worth noting you may need to download Java from the description above in order to start the server.

Your server will attempt to start, but it will fail. You should now have an EULA.txt file though. Open this file and change “eula=false” to “eula=true” and save the file assuming you agree to the Minecraft EULA.

Now, when you double-click the run.bat file your server will start. You will notice there is a “plugins” folder in your main server directory. This is where you will be able to install plugins. Just drag-and-drop any plugins you want to add to the server into this plugins folder and restart your server. When you do, the plugins will be activated and most plugins will generate a new folder within the plugins folder where you can edit that plugin’s config files.

You can join your server at this point using the IP address “localhost”. To play on your Minecraft Spigot server with your friends, you will need to port forward. There is a complete guide in the description above on how to port forward for any Minecraft server. This includes a Spigot server. After you port forward, your friends will be able join using your public IP address.

At this point though, you now know how to make a Spigot server in Minecraft. If you have any questions about how to create a Spigot Minecraft server and add plugins to it, let us know in the comment section below. We will try our best to help you out.
