In May 1940 Germany launched a vast offensive against the Fortified Positions of Liege (Position Fortifiée de Liège), which consisted of 16 forts at the time.

Two of the most important forts were Fort Eben-Emael and Fort d'Aubin-Neufchâteau, which you can visit for yourself, along with many other forts in the area.

Within this video, we also learn about a top secret German weapon called Röchling shells, which were tested on Fort Aubin-Neufchâteau in 1942 and 1943. These 'bunker-busting' artillery shells were designed to penetrate metres of earth and concrete, bury into the floor of deep bunkers, and then explode.
